Mission
To recognize scholarly excellence, connect knowledge across disciplines and regions, and advance independent inquiry that contributes to science, culture, education, and human well-being.
LAANSSS is an independent scholarly academy connecting excellence across natural sciences, engineering, health, social sciences, and the humanities.

The Academy provides a permanent intellectual space where scholars can exchange ideas, examine major questions, and contribute to a more informed public life.
It is conceived not as a university, degree-granting institution, accreditation body, government agency, or intergovernmental organization, but as an independent academy devoted to scholarly recognition, exchange, and service.
The Academy grew from a sustained habit of collaboration among scholars working across Latin America and with colleagues in other regions
Over time, researchers met through shared projects, comparative studies, specialist networks, editorial work, field programmes, and cross-border scientific exchange. These encounters revealed both the depth of expertise present in the region and the need for a durable scholarly home able to connect it without flattening disciplinary difference.
LAANSSS gives institutional form to that aspiration. It brings foundational science, the study of living and planetary systems, engineering, health, agriculture, social inquiry, and the humanities into one academy. Its purpose is not to replace universities, professional societies, or research institutes, but to provide a complementary space for recognition, reflection, independent peer exchange, and carefully governed collaboration.
The Academy is Latin American in perspective and international in scholarly reach. It seeks to strengthen the visibility of knowledge produced in the region, encourage exchange across languages and research traditions, and connect local insight with questions of worldwide significance. Its institutional character is intended to be built gradually through published standards, documented decisions, credible peer processes, and a record of work that earns trust over time.
A permanent scholarly home for disciplinary excellence and consequential exchange

To recognize scholarly excellence, connect knowledge across disciplines and regions, and advance independent inquiry that contributes to science, culture, education, and human well-being.
To become a trusted international scholarly community in which Latin American perspectives participate fully in global knowledge and global scholarship engages seriously with the region.
A living framework for judgment, conduct, and responsibility—not a decorative list of values.
We value work of the highest intellectual rigor and significance.
We uphold honesty, transparency, responsibility, and respect for evidence.
We protect scholarly judgment from improper political or commercial influence.
We create conditions for disciplines to meet without losing their depth.
We value diverse intellectual traditions, geographies, languages, and perspectives.
We encourage knowledge that deepens understanding and contributes responsibly to society.
In depth
An academy can offer a particular kind of intellectual space: one in which a question remains open long enough for its assumptions to be examined. Universities, laboratories, cultural institutions and public agencies already produce knowledge under different mandates. An independent academy can connect those settings, invite scrutiny across institutional boundaries and keep difficult questions in view when they do not fit a single programme. Its usefulness depends on the quality of that exchange, the clarity of its purpose and the willingness of participants to explain what their evidence supports.
Independence becomes meaningful through choices about questions, funding and interpretation. A scholarly initiative should be able to report an inconvenient result, acknowledge an unresolved disagreement and revise its position when better evidence appears. Supporters may help make inquiry possible, but the conditions of support should leave conclusions open. For LAANSSS, this is a way to articulate the value of an academy: a convening space whose credibility would grow through work that readers can examine, rather than through the prestige of an institutional name alone.
